What aunts and wheelie bins have in common
There are two things that the human brain simply can’t remember: the first is Great Aunt Joan’s birthday who always gets upset when you forget to congratulate her. The other is whether your old pizza take-out box should be put in the paper recycling bin or not. And now for the good news. We can, at least, help you solve one of these problems – which is why we’ve put together the following overview of what goes in what bins.
Spoiler alert: your pizza take-out box is one of those special cases. If there are only a few grease marks, then it may – and indeed should – be put in the blue bin. If it’s covered in bits of old food, then it must go in the grey general waste bin.

The problem with the yellow bins
These bins are a construct that don’t really reflect the way people live. Consumers naturally tend to separate their waste according to what type of material it’s made of rather than whether it’s packaging material or not. Which means that a whole number of products end up in the yellow bin that – while they may be of the right material – are not actually old packaging. The circular economy refers to this as intelligent outthrow. Recycling bins were introduced in response to this and aim to enable a better and more comprehensive collection of recyclable materials so that plastics and metals can be recycled.

Got a lot of waste to get rid of? Rather than filling up your bin right to the top in one go and, possibly, falling out with the other people living in your building, take it to your local household waste recycling centre instead. Many local councils even let their local residents hand their waste over for free.
A household waste recycling centre is called a ‘Wertstoffhof’ in Germany
An A+ for trendsorters
What a lot of people don’t realise: sorting waste correctly starts before it’s even put in the bin. A yoghurt pot, for example, isn’t only made of plastic but often has a lid made of aluminium. Both belong in the yellow bin or the recycling bin – but preferably not until they’ve been separated from each other.
The only way to guarantee that both the plastic and the aluminium are recycled is to take the lid off the pot before throwing them in the bin.
Let’s stick with the yoghurt pot: it’s also best to avoid stacking several pots one inside the other. While this might create more space in your bin, it’s actually counterproductive when it comes to recycling. The machines at the sorting plant aren’t able to recognise them as individual yoghurt pots when they’re stacked together. Worst case scenario: they’re sent to a waste incineration plant rather than a recycling facility.
If the materials aren’t separated, they can’t be recycled! The more you sort your waste according to type, the more you help conserve natural resources and curb climate change.
A look beyond household wheelie bins
There are a whole number of other ways to get rid of your waste besides the wheelie bins outside your front door. One thing is really important: you must never throw hazardous materials that can be dangerous for people and the environment into your wheelie bins. Everything that has been classified as hazardous waste must be handed over to the right collection point as each kind of hazardous waste has its own dedicated waste collection scheme. Other types of waste and where to take them
Bottle banks
This is the place to take your jam jars and disposable glass bottles. Bottle banks, however, should not be used for disposing of flameproof glass (e.g. coffee pots), window panes or mirrors (see those tricky cases).
Clothing banks
If you’re looking to clear out your wardrobe, then the best place to take any clothes that can still be worn is a clothing bank. This conserves natural resources and helps people in need.
Electronic retailer take-back responsibilities
You can hand back your old electrical and electronic items to retailers. But only to an electronic retailer that has a sales area of 400m² or more.
Battery collection boxes
Every supermarket has battery recycling boxes and these are an ideal way to get rid of your old batteries. Alternatively, you can take them to your local household waste recycling centre.
Bulky waste
If you can’t transport your waste yourself because you’ve got too much of it or it’s too big to fit in your car, then the best thing to do is to use your local council’s bulky waste collection service. Simply put your items outside your front door on a prearranged date and the council will pick them up.
